Shearman launches Hong Kong law practice with O’Melveny hires

Colin Law

Corporate partner Colin Law, former head of O’Melveny’s Hong Kong corporate practice, has joined Shearman as co-head of the Hong Kong practice.

Fellow corporate partner Peter Chen, an M&A and corporate finance specialist who has advised on a number of Hong Kong and London initial public offerings, joins along with him.

The pair are establishing a local law firm which, upon approval by the Hong Kong Law Society, will be merged into Shearman’s Hong Kong operations.

Shearman’s Asia managing partner Matthew Bersani, who will co-head the practice along with Law, said Law and Chen’s ‘extensive experience” handling complex M&A transactions and securities offerings combined with their Hong Kong law capabilities made them a “perfect fit” for the firm.

“This move will enable us to serve existing demand for one-stop, top-tier legal services as well as to tap into a wealth of future opportunities in the region” added Bersani.

Shearman’s Hong Kong corporate team’s recent experience includes advising Sichuan Tengzhong on its proposed acquisition of the Hummer brand from GM and the underwriters on the $2.35bn IPO of Metallurgical Corp of China, one of the largest Hong Kong IPOs of 2009.

A spokesperson for O’Melveny said the firm continued to operate a “very vibrant and busy” Hong Kong office.

“We wish them well,” she added.
