A new independent Romanian firm has been formed through the merger of the local member of Central and Eastern European alliance BPV Legal with Ştefănică & Florea.
Combined firm BPV Grigorescu Ştefănică began work this week. It currently has six partners and around 25 associates, operating from Bucharest.
Managing partner Cătălin Grigorescu said the firms had previously discussed a merger in 2007, but talks had fallen through. Negotiations restarted in October last year.
According to Grigorescu the two firms had complementary practices.
“They had a more litigation and energy-focused business and lacked corporate, regulatory and tax. We had a smaller litigation practice which we just started in 2009 and we felt we needed this extra strength in litigation, which is very popular nowadays,” said Grigorescu.
He said in particular there was an overlap in the two firms’ energy practices and the merged firm planned to exploit this.
Meanwhile, the Czech member firm of the BPV Legal alliance, Braun Partners, has expanded its offices into Bratislava. The alliance also includes firms in Belgium, Hungary and Austria.
