Linklaters partner takes top legal role at hedge fund Winton Capital

Linklaters capital markets partner Brigid Rentoul has left the firm to join Winton Capital Management as legal chief amid a restructuring of the West End hedge fund manager’s in-house team.

Rentoul has joined Winton Capital as head of legal, taking responsibility for the company’s business legal affairs, and will work alongside incumbent legal chief Andrew Bastow.

The move sees Winton rejig its in-house legal team, which hires outside firms including Simmons & Simmons, by splitting the top role in two, giving Bastow a greater focus on regulatory matters and Rentoul a business focus. Both will report to CEO Anthony Daniell.

Bastow’s title was previously general counsel and director of government and regulatory affairs, but the general counsel role has now been abolished and he will remain as director of government and regulatory affairs.

Rentoul’s move bring the legal team’s headcount to five, with the company’s overall staff count rising by roughly 15 per cent to approximately 260 in the past year. It manages assets worth $28bn and plans to expand its staff numbers by roughly 15 per cent in the coming year.

She officially joined the fund manager on 1 July but will start in earnest in September after a period of integration.

A number of partners have left Linklaters in recent months, with capital markets partner Alan Davies’ move to Simmons & Simmons the latest key departure (3 July 2012).
