Subject to approval from the Law Society of Hong Kong, Chiomenti will begin an exclusive association with CdB and JC & Co, a Hong Kong firm that launched in 2009 after founding partner Claudio de Bedin left Cylde & Co’s local office.
The firms are forced to operate under an exclusive association for three years before embarking on a full merger under the Chiomenti brand, due to local regulations.
Chiomenti already has an office in Hong Kong, which it established in 2008, and offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore.
“We already have 30 lawyers in China, in Beijing and Shanghai, and we established ourselves in Hong Kong a year and a half ago, but as a green field,” said Chiomenti partner Carlo Croff. “But Hong Kong remains a door to China, and we needed to accelerate our progress.
“Our choice of firm was driven by two reasons: first, they have 15 lawyers, who all have local capacity, and de Bedin is a Hong Kong lawyer but is originally from Italy and has very good Italian clients [in Hong Kong]. So with one move we’ve achieved two objectives.”
Other partners at CdB and JC & Co are Dominic Lee and Jason Carmichael, also former Clyde & Co partners.
In April 2008 Chiomenti boosted its Asia presence with a merger with Sino-Italian firm Birindelli & Associati (23 April 2008).
