Dechert has continued its European investment funds expansion with the capture of SJ Berwin’s head of German financial markets.
Achim Pütz will join Dechert as a partner in the firm’s Munich office, alongside associates Frank Wilbert and Martin Hüwel.
Pütz is regarded as one of the leading lights of the German alternative investment industry and is founder of the German Alternative Investment Association. He specialises in alternative fund structuring, structured debt products and investment strategy.
Pütz’s arrival is the latest in a series of partner hires for Dechert’s European investment fund practice. The firm’s Dublin office has seen the arrival of William Fry partner Declan O’Sullivan and Invesco general counsel Michelle Moran (12 July 2010), and in March the firm announced the hire of Munich-based Clifford Chance partner Hans Stamm.
The firm expects to make additional hires in coming months. Dechert’s financial services co-head Peter Astleford said: “Achim’s arrival is all part of the wider picture. Twenty years ago you could run an investment funds practice from London. Now, the ability to operate an integrated European practice has become increasingly important.”
He added: “Achim’s more or less the father of the alternative investment industry in Germany and his work fits nicely with what we’re doing and will complement our work in Ireland and Luxemburg.”
