The Commercial Court could be on the hunt for a new leader should the Ministry of Justice confirm the widely held belief that its current head, Mrs Justice Gloster, is to be promoted to the appellate bench from October (see story).
Rumours of her anticipated elevation have been circling the bar in recent weeks, with her judgment in the Berezovsky v Abramovich trial expected before she steps up.
Gloster, a dame, isn’t the only high profile lawyer connected with that case to have received a judicial leg up. The defendant, Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich, has lost two leading counsel to bench appointments.
Jonathan Sumption QC appeared for Abramovich during the six-month Commercial Court trial in front of Gloster J before joining the Supreme Court in January while Andrew Popplewell QC fought – unsuccessfully – to have the claim thrown out before being promoted to the High Court in July.
Oligarchs. All round good news for lawyers.
