Alix Newbold: Norton Rose

What time do you start work each day? I’m at my most productive in the mornings so I aim to get in before 8am. Sometimes it’s just too hard to get out of bed though.

Name: Alix Newbold
Firm: Norton Rose
Position: Business manager – infrastructure, mining & commodities
Lives: Bermondsey

What’s the dullest task you’ve ever been given?

Segmenting an 8,000-contact mail list.

How much time do you spend on Facebook each week?

Not enough to be of interest.

If you could introduce one law, what would it be and why?

A mandatory maximum 35-hour working week.

How did you spend your last bonus? (If you have never received a bonus, how would you hope to spend it in the future)?

I paid off some of my mortgage. How boring.

What do you wear on dress-down Fridays?

Jeans – with heels of course.

What is the most irritating habit of any partner you’ve worked for?

Anyone who is habitually more than five minutes late for a meeting or fails to turn up at all.

How do you unwind after the end of a hard week?

Dancing.

Do you see your colleagues on weekends?

Definitely – having friends makes work much more fun.

Have you ever fallen in love at work? (If so, please provide details.)

Only with the baristas who remember my daily coffee order and make it without burning the milk or coffee.

If you were a lawyer what would your practice area be and why?

Whatever it was Elle Woods did in Legally Blonde.

Which is the best practice group for gossip and why?

I don’t know. The trainees always have the best gossip I think.

Given the chance, which overseas office would you work in?

I’d be hard pushed to leave London. I think it’s the best city in the world and the work we do from here is truly international. We support clients on their business operations all over the world and I get to work regularly with colleagues in our other offices, particularly South Africa, Canada and Australia.

What do you eat for lunch?

It’s usually the highlight of my day so I’m up for anything more interesting than a ready made, refrigerated sandwich.

Is your salary (in thousands) greater than your age?

It’s greater than the age I say I am anyway.

What items do you always carry around with you at work?

It really should be my security pass but never having a belt loop to hang it off means it too often lives on my desk.

Of whom do you have photos on your desk?

Me and my two sisters in Australia last new year’s eve.

Which pub do the non-lawyers drink in?

Please let me know when you find one without a lawyer in it.

Soy Latte or Nescafe?

Urgh, neither.

City break or weekend in the country?

Most definitely a city break. The country freaks me out – all that nature and space and quiet.

Sum up your firm, chambers or employer in three words.

I’ve only been at Norton Rose for a month, but I’d have to say quality, unity and integrity are pretty apt.
