Bird & Bird has bolstered its corporate team with the hire of two partners from Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe.
Richard Eaton and Struan Penwarden, whose practices focus on growth technology companies, are expected to start at Bird & Bird next month, taking the partner headcount in the City corporate department to 12.
The pair joined the US firm in October 2008 having previously worked together at the now defunct Heller Ehrman.
Eaton said: “They’ve such a good IP team [at Bird & Bird] that it sits well with our practice. We like to work with companies through their life cycles, rather than act for venture capitalists or banks.”
Eaton and Penwarden list a number of technology start-ups and clean technology companies as their clients. Among those expected to move with them to their new firm are listed entities such as Ocean Power Technologies, Gas Turbine Efficiency and Autonomy. They also act for Kreos, Europe’s biggest venture debt lender.
Bird & Bird joint head of corporate Neil Blundell said: “We’ve known these guys for a long time so when the opportunity came along we were very enthusiastic from the outset as they’re a great fit for us.”
The departures leave Orrick with eight partners in its City corporate team.
