Norton Rose Fulbright picks up Cleary Brussels partner

Norton Rose Fulbright has strengthened its Brussels presence with the hire of longstanding Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton corporate and competition partner James Modrall.

Modrall (often known as Jay) has advised on aspects of last year’s takeover of financial services GlobeOp by TPG (2 February 2012) and has also been involved in Ryanair’s long-running bid for rival Aer Lingus (28 August 2013).

He has been a partner at Cleary for 18 years, having joined the firm originally in 1986. Modrall advises on the competition aspects of M&A and financial services.

Norton Rose Fulbright’s global co-head of regulatory and investigations, Martin Coleman said: ”Our clients tell us that regulatory issues – including competition law and financial services regulation – are high on their agenda of matters preoccupying them.”

The hire follows last week’s appointment in Paris of Hogan Lovells real estate partner Jean-Pascal Bus and the appointments in July of German tax partner Alexander Hemmelrath and CMS London private equity star Richard Bull (16 July 2013).

However the firm has seen a number of partner depatures since the 3 June merger between Norton Rose and Fulbright & Jaworski (14 November 2012), although none in Europe. Among the most high-profile was the loss of eight legacy Fulbright partners in Dubai (16 July 2013) and the appointment of insurance partner Ashley Prebble for Clifford Chance in London (19 June 2013).
