Ashurst has hired Nabarro real estate litigation head Iain Travers in a move to bulk up its property disputes offering, which was hit by the departure of practice head Michael Madden last year.
Travers is set to join Ashurst on 1 November as head of real estate litigation with a mandate to assess and grow the firm’s capability in the area.
Travers has advised a number of Nabarro’s established real estate clients, including British Land, but is not expected to transfer many of the firm’s property relationships with him.
He commented: “There will be some work I will take with me, but that’s not the primary aim of the move.”
Ashurst disputes head Simon Bromwich said in a statement: “Dispute resolution and real estate are core focuses for the firm and Iain’s appointment is a further important step in developing our real estate sector practice. It is also consistent with our target of growing our dispute resolution capability. Iain is a highly respected lawyer who will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the group.”
Ashurst’s real estate practice was hit by several departures in 2011, with real estate litigation chief Madden joining US firm Winston & Strawn’s City base amid a string of non-contentious property partner exits (13 October 2011). This week Madden was appointed head of Winston’s London office (19 September 2012).
