The WA Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) has highlighted that it will focus on investigating serious incidents with a view to potential prosecutions and 10 key areas in the 2013–14 year.

There were more than 800 serious incidents reported to the DMP last year. Inspector Holmes said at the Mines Safety Road Show that the DMP investigations team will focus on serious incidents (given the decrease in mining-related fatalities) and will investigate them more thoroughly with a view to potentially initiating prosecutions.

This indication should put companies on notice of the need to get good legal advice and have advisers in place prior to investigations being commenced to ensure that they do what they can to avoid increasing their legal risks following a serious incident…
