SJ Berwin’s masterplan for improving staff motivation: make it easier for them to leave the London office.
That’s at least how it seems after the City firm called its partners to a meeting last Saturday to discuss, among other things, how staff can feel more engaged.
Strikingly, the firm has admitted that it needs to improve (remember the vac scheme all-nighter?). It brought in an outside consultancy to review its staff enthusiasm and came up with a range of embryonic plans to make things better, such as offering more international secondments and making it easier to travel abroad. The irony of turning frowns into smiles by letting people work away from the City headquarters cannot be overstated.
And of course, it’s always helpful to hold a strategy day on a Saturday to get people to feel more enthusiastic about the business.
At least those partners who have been restructured out will feel chuffed with their lie-in on a weekend.
