Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) has taken a trio of real estate lawyers in Tokyo from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, including the latter’s former Japan real estate head Masahiro Shiga.
Shiga has joined MoFo’s Japanese joint venture partner firm Ito Mitomi Horitsu Jimusho as a partner. He is joined by associates Mori Inada and Mansu Pak, who also previously worked in Skadden’s Tokyo office.
Shiga’s practice focuses on real estate finance, restructurings and real estate investment trusts. Over the past decade, he has advised on the purchase of more than ¥1tn ($12bn) in Japanese real estate, and represented lenders in more than ¥600bn ($7 billion) in bonds issued and securitized loans.
“Shiga joins us at a very opportune moment. We’re seeing renewed confidence in Japan among long-term investors, and more opportunistic funds are scouring the market for attractive distressed assets,” said Ken Siegel, managing partner of MoFor’s Tokyo office in a statement.
MoFo has been in a hiring mode in Asia. Prior to the apppontments in Tokyo, the firm recently took on Allen & Overy Hong Kong partner Jeremy Hunt and Orrick Beijing partner Thomas Man (3 October 2012).
