The Co-operative Bank has named Brona McKeown as its new general counsel and company secretary, a month after announcing the split of its legal function.
McKeown joins the Co-op from Coventry Building Society, where she was interim general counsel and corporate secretary. She previously worked at Barclays in roles including global general counsel of Barclays Corporate.
The Co-op Group split its legal function earlier this month (6 November 2013), following the news that the Co-op bank will host the UK’s first ever ‘bail-in’ by a consortium of hedge funds (4 November 2013).
She will report to the Co-op Bank’s CEO Niall Booker and will oversee the bank’s legal and governance functions, as well as working alongside the Co-op Group’s general counsel Alistair Asher. McKeown will also sit on the bank’s executive committee.
Booker said McKeown’s experience of legal and regulatory issues in financial services was key.
“Given the transformation of the bank, including the revised capital structure, the LME process and a putative future listing, this is a key appointment for the organisation,” he added in a statement.
