Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has hired the former global co-chair of DLA Piper’s hospitality and leisure group to its real estate practice.
DLA real estate partner Karen Friebe specialises in the acquisition, development and disposal of property in the hotel and leisure sector and will join the firm’s core real estate team at the beginning of next year.
As well as being global co-chair of the hospitality and leisure group at DLA Piper, Karen had also led the EMEA Hospitality and Leisure team for a number of years at DLA.
The real estate team acts for Mariott Hotels as well as other real estate clients Barclays and Balfour Beatty and Friebe will take up the role under real estate head Chris de Pury.
De Pury took up the reins from Robert MacGregor in April after MacGregor was elected chairman of the firm earlier in the year (4 April 2013).
The move adds to BLP’s well known real estate department and marks its continued focus on real estate in the face of departures across other practice areas. Real estate represented a quarter of BLP’s total revenue last year but turnover contracted in the practice area, falling by 2.3 per cent from £62m to £60.6m (30 September 2013).
