The race to become Addleshaw Goddard’s next senior partner has kicked off with M&A partner Andrew Carpenter and head of corporate finance Charles Penney emerging as the only two candidates.
The senior partner position is up for grabs after Monica Burch announced she was stepping down from the role at the end of her current term.
Burch was originally elected to the position in 2010 and stood again in 2013. During her last election campaign Burch made it clear that she would only stand for two terms.
As well as working within Addleshaws’ M&A and private equity group Carpenter also leads the team responsible for the firm’s international strategy. He is particularly experience in the financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, transport, and infrastructure sectors.
Penney moved to Addleshaws in 2005 after leaving legacy firm Lovells. During his time at Lovells he worked as the firm’s resident managing partner for New York and spent a two-year secondment as secretary of the UK Takeover Panel.
The nominations period has now closed and the firm has now entered a period for hustings and voting. The new senior partner will begin a three-year term on 1 May.
Addleshaws was recently in merger talks with Scottish heavyweight Maclay Murray & Spens. It was understood that a deal between the two firms had been negotiated but was dependent on a partnership vote. Last month it emerged that the merger talks had been called off.
Charles Penny is a great guy. Considered, principled and hopefully a natural choice. With Charles at the helm, AG would definitely be a more balanced and professional ship. He really deserves it. Great client skills too.
