Squire Sanders unveils reduced partnership promotions round

Squire Sanders has announced the promotion of seven lawyers to its partnership ranks, with two lawyers making the cut in the UK.

The number of new partners is down on last year, when eight lawyers were made up (13 March 2013). In 2012, Squire Sanders made up 13 new partners (14 March 2012).

Two of this year’s new partners hail from UK offices: litigator Russell Kelsall in Leeds and real estate lawyer Neil Taylor in Birmingham. The annual January promotions also saw the firm promote two in Los Angeles and one partner apiece in Madrid, San Francisco and Perth.

At the same time as the partner promotions, Squire Sanders also made up six lawyers to principal, a role that sits between the ranks of senior associate and partner and does not require equity to be contributed to the firm.

The firm, which has around 1,300 lawyers and 39 offices around the world, has recently embarked on a hiring spree in the UK, most recently bringing in Berwin Leighton Paisner’s (BLP) former employment head Fraser Younson into the fold (7 February 2014).

This followed the hire of DLA Piper competition and regulatory lawyer Martin Rees, a cartel investigations and appeals specialist who joined DLA Piper in 1999 and was head of competition until 2002 (6 January 2014).

It came a month ater DLA Piper real estate partner Gary Paddison and associate Rachel Orton resigned for Squire Sanders (23 December 2013).

The firm is also in early stage merger talks with Washington law and lobbying firm Patton Boggs. The broader partnership is already understood to be involved as the diligence process wades through issues such as culture, financial metrics and client base fit.

The combined firm would have around 1,700 lawyers in 45 offices across 22 countries. It would give Patton Boggs the international platform its clients are increasingly demanding and Squire Sanders a big kick up in DC (4 March 2014).
