European moves: 12 June 2014

All the latest partner hires and other appointments within Continental European firms and offices.

Benelux

Accountancy and consulting giant EY has hired Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer partner Richard Norbruis to lead its global transaction law practice (3 June 2014). Norbruis has been a partner in Freshfields’ Amsterdam office since 1999. For the last three years he has held the role of global people partner, responsible for issues including recruitment, learning and development, diversity, partner development and leadership.

Osborne Clarke has hired a team of four partners and three associates to kickstart its new Amsterdam office (2 June 2014). Of the firm’s new partners, two joined directly from Baker & McKenzie’s Amsterdam office, while one hailed from Norton Rose Fulbright and another from Dutch firm Steins Bisschop & Schepel. Former Baker & McKenzie partner Michiel Odink, who led the US-based firm’s IP practice in Amsterdam, has become Osborne Clarke’s first managing partner in the city.

Mayer Brown has appointed competition partner Jens Peter Schmidt as partner-in-charge for Brussels, effective 1 June 2014. Schmidt succeeds Kiran Desai, who led the Brussels office for almost two decades.

Central & Eastern Europe

Austrian firm CHSH Cerha Hempel Spiegelfeld Hlawati has hired Wolf Theiss partner Harald Stingl. Stingl is a corporate specialist and is based in Vienna.

France

De Pardieu Brocas Maffei has hired White & Case partner Eric Muller. Muller joins the French firm as a partner in its corporate team.

Winston & Strawn has promoted arbitrators Philippe Cavalieros to its partnership in the Paris office and Dolores Bentolila to associate in Geneva.

Racine has hired real estate lawyers Carol Santoni and Mélanie de Saqui de Sannes from Gide Loyrette Nouel. Santoni joins Racine as a partner.

Marvell has appointed tax duo Guillaume Massé and Emmanuelle Sorine as partners. Massé was previously counsel at Marvell, while Sorine joined the firm recently from a role as in-house tax director at Pathé. The pair will jointly lead the firm’s tax department.

Germany

Sidley Austin is closing its Frankfurt office, its only base in Germany, following a spate of partner exits over the last two years (9 June 2014). The move will see counsel Thomas Kulzer and associate Martina Bender join Gleiss Lutz.

Herbert Smith Freehills has recruited Kai Liebrich as a partner in the Frankfurt office. He joins from Mayer Brown where he became a partner in 2011 having joined the firm’s Frankfurt office in 2005.

Olswang has hired seven lawyers for its German patent team, including the former head of legacy Hammonds’ Munich office, Herbert Kunz (29 May 2014). Kunz has joined the firm as a partner, alongside five other lawyers from his boutique firm Dr Kunz & Kollegen. Olswang has also hired Tobias Reker as a legal director from an in-house role at Knorr-Bremse.

Dechert has hired Rüdiger Herrmann in Frankfurt as a partner from WilmerHale. A corporate lawyer, Herrmann focuses his practice on transactions in the life sciences industry.

Iberia

Portuguese firm PLMJ has picked up tax partner Miguel C. Reis from the Porto office of Iberian giant Garrigues (3 June 2014). Reis joined Garrigues in 2006 and specialises in all areas of tax. He becomes the fourth partner in PLMJ’s tax team, led by João Magalhães Ramalho.

PLMJ has also hired Pacôme Ziegler as a lawyer in its arbitration team. Ziegler was previously an associate in Dechert’s Paris office.

Italy

NCTM has increased its privacy, TMT and finance strength by merging with Rome firm Panetta & Associati (6 June 2014). The move sees name partner Rocco Panetta join NCTM’s equity, while Giorgio Telarico and Domenico Rinaldi become salaried partners at the larger firm. Another five lawyers will also join NCTM.

Gianni Origoni Grippo Cappelli & Partners has announced the hire of two lawyers, including partner Alessandro Stoppa, from Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker (30 May 2014). Stoppa will make the move to Gianni Origoni along with counsel Alessio Giammarino. Both specialist in corporate finance within the real estate sector, and will sit in Gianni Origoni’s real estate team.

Meanwhile the firm has promoted Nicola Bonante and Richard Hamilton to its partnership. Bonante is an employment lawyer while Hamilton focuses on debt and equity capital markets.

Turkey

Schoenherr has hired Gur Law Firm of counsel Rosario Sapuppo as the head of a newly-established Italy desk in its Istanbul office.
