Clifford Chance has hired a Italian partner dedicated to competition law with the appointment of Bonelli Erede Pappalardo partner Luciano Di Via.
Di Via will join Clifford Chance’s Rome office in August, although he will split his time between the Italian capital and the country’s finance centre Milan.
The hire follows the departure of Cristoforo Osti to Chiomenti in autumn last year. Clifford Chance has managed antitrust issues through its public law practice in the country in the interim period.
Di Via became a partner at Bonelli in 2003, having joined the firm from the Italian Competition Authority two years earlier. He spent a decade at the authority, including a two-year stint as the national branch expert at the European Commission Trade Authority.
His clients are understood to include Italian corporates such as insurance groups Generali and Fondiaria SAI, energy company Liquigas-SHV, telecoms group Wind-Wilpelcom and food business Federalimentare.
The hire brings the number of partners at Clifford Chance in Italy to 19. The firm has around 100 fee-earners in its two Italian offices.
Clifford Chance’s global antitrust head Oliver Bretz said the sector was increasingly requiring a “global but local” approach to cases, and Di Via would fit well into this model.
Di Via is the second partner to leave Bonelli in a months. Litigator Luca Radicati di Brozolo is leaving to set up a boutique, with the news breaking in early June (12 June 2013).
