The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fines and undertakings published in December highlight the importance of providing comprehensive data protection training to employees who handle personal data, and also remind organisations of the rules relating to direct marketing, particularly when sending electronic communications.
In addition, it has recently come to light that between 15 and 18 October 2013, personal details including names, dates of birth and the immigration status of 1,598 illegal immigrants were accidentally published on the UK Home Office website. Although the information has now been removed and measures have been put in place to prevent such an error from occurring in the future, the ICO will be examining this breach and the Home Office has ordered a separate internal investigation.
