Eversheds has commented on the latest industrial trends survey from the CBI, saying that the resurgence in UK manufacturing has prompted calls for a dedicated government office.
Robin Johnson, sector head for diversified industrials at Eversheds, said: ‘The reality is that there is markedly increased confidence within the UK manufacturing community.
‘Through a number of initiatives such as the Catapult Research initiative and the fiscal measures announced in the Autumn Statement, industry and government have emphasised the place in the economy for manufacturing.
‘Energy costs remain a concern but moves towards additive manufacturing and the recent announcements by companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, JCB and Johnson & Johnson on research initiatives as well as support for apprenticeships mean there is as good an alignment between policy makers and regulators as there has been for some time. The announcement on infrastructure projects in the Autumn Statement is also seen as boosting confidence.
‘Given this background, many industry commentators are now questioning whether there is a role for a dedicated office of manufacturing in government.’
