Legacy SJ Berwin HK partner joins Stephenson Harwood

The newly combined Hong Kong office of King & Wood Mallesons and SJ Berwin has seen the first legacy SJ Berwin partner departure, as litigation partner Giovanna Kwong leaves for Stephenson Harwood.

Kwong will join Stephenson Harwood as a partner in its litigation team in Hong Kong. She advises financial institutions and pharmaceutical, corporate and public sector clients in litigation and dispute resolution. Duel qualified in Hong Kong and in England and Wales, she has practised in each of the jurisdictions for over a decade.

“Giovanna’s expertise fits well with our current China team. Her arrival will help to further strengthen our rank of Chinese-speaking dispute resolution partners,” said Voon Keat Lai, Stephenson Harwood’s Greater China managing partner.

Kwong joined legacy SJ Berwin from Fried Frank in 2009 when the City firm opened an office in Hong Kong (23 March 2009). She was also a sole proprietor of local Hong Kong firm Kwongs, which was in association with SJ Berwin’s Hong Kong office.

When the merger between King & Wood Mallesons and SJ Berwin went live on 1 November 2013, the Hong Kong team of SJ Berwin moved into King & Wood Mallesons’ Hong Kong office (31 July 2013).

There were four partners in SJ Berwin’s Hong Kong office prior to the combination (24 September 2012). However, only two partners, funds partners George Pinkham and Tony Gibson, now remain in the combined office. Corporate partner Peter Anderson has recently relocated back to London to take up the general counsel role for King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin, the UK, Europe and the Middle East arm of King & Wood Mallesons.
