Allen & Overy has hired partner Peter McDonald from Herbert Smith Freehills to build up the firm’s antitrust and competition practice in Australia.
McDonald will be based in Allen & Overy’s Sydney office and will be a partner of the firm’s global antitrust team.
He joined legacy Freehills’ competition and market regulation group in Melbourne in 2003 after five years working with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission as a senior officer. He was made up in 2009.
McDonald’s appointment came over a year after the departure of A&O’s previous competition partner Dave Poddar left to join Clifford Chance’s Sydney office (17 January 2013). Prior to joining A&O in June 2010 (22 June 2010), he had been a long-serving partner at legacy Mallesons Stephen Jacques and was head of the firm’s Australia competition team.
Allen & Overy has 21 partners across two offices in Sydney and Perth, which were established in 2010 (8 February 2010). McDonald is the firm’s only competition partner in Australia.
