The Korean Ministry of Justice has awarded Stephenson Harwood a licence to practice in Seoul, South Korea.
Michael Kim, who joined the firm in February 2014, led the successful application and will be managing partner of the office following its opening.
Kim has a leading reputation in the Korean market, including experience in shipping, ship finance, shipbuilding and offshore and general commercial litigation and arbitration matters.
Opening in Seoul will enable Stephenson Harwood to develop its existing Korea practice, where the firm acts for some of the largest conglomerates across shipping, shipbuilding and ship finance work, banking and trade sectors. Clients include the Export-Import Bank of Korea, STX Corporation, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM).
Stephenson Harwood will now work to obtain the additional regulatory clearances required for the new office, in anticipation of the office opening in the autumn.
