Blake Morgan launches personal injury spin-off

Blake Morgan has launched a spin off of its personal injury and clinical negligence lawyers into a new brand BL Claims Solicitors.

BL Claims Solicitors will remain part of the Blake Morgan group, which was formed following the merger of Blake Lapthorn and Morgan Cole at the beginning of July (20 March 2014).

The subsidiary has 50 existing staff but aims to recruit new teams of lawyers as part of its growth strategy.

Legacy Blake Lapthorn lawyers form the bulk of the new business, which is headquartered in Southampton, with other bases in locations around the country including Cardiff, London, Oxford, Portsmouth and Reading.

Former Blake Lapthorn clinical negligence head John White will lead the office, with partner Alison McClure joining him as the firm’s non-executive director.

McClure was a partner at Blake Lapthorn for more than 25 years and will advise on business strategy and financial management.

The senior management team will also include Sampson Coward personal injury lawyer David Healey, clinical negligence lawyer Kym Provan, and multi-jurisdictional disputes and travel insurance litigation expert Daniel Scognamiglio.

Although BL Claims Solicitors will operate independently as a new brand, the two firms will work together on some claims handling and Blake Morgan will provide follow-up support on issues such as probate, conveyancing, trusts, court of protection, planning, education and family law.

Prior to the tie-up with Blake Lapthorn, Morgan Cole off-loaded its volume claims and catastrophic injury teams to DAC Beachcroft and legacy Berrymans Lace Mawer (BLM).

The move gifted DAC Beachcroft five partners, 35 fee-earners and 24 support staff, while BLM acquired insurance partner Simon Cradick’s team, including five lawyers and two support staff (15 November 2013).
