On Sunday, police in Manchester arrested a man in connection with a barrage of tweets sent to Caroline Criado-Perez, a feminist campaigner fighting for an image of a woman to appear on the new bank note.

During a 12-hour period, Criado-Perez is understood to have received approximately 50 abusive tweets each hour.

Assuming there is sufficient evidence and public interest in prosecuting, the options open to the criminal prosecution service (CPS) are as follows
