CMS has continued its trend of strong female promotions, making up 12 women in a total promotions round of 31 lawyers globally, the equivalent of 39 per cent of the total new partners.
The new partners have been promoted across 22 offices worldwide with the firm’s German offices receiving the highest number at six partners. CMS’s French and UK offices both received five new partners while the Netherlands and Bulgaria received three and two respectively.
The round focused heavily on CMS’s corporate and commercial practice, which saw nine partners added to its ranks globally. Energy, environment, projects and construction saw the second highest number of promotions after gaining four new partners.
CMS UK senior partner Penelope Warne said: “With our new partners, I’m encouraged to see the breadth of talent rising up across the firm. It’s also very good to see the female representation of our global promotions remaining high and spanning a number of our core jurisdictions and sectors, a reflection of the inclusive culture we are proud of at CMS.”
Despite the high female representation the percentage is still lower than last year when women represented 49 per cent of those promoted.
CMS also promoted two of its fee-earners to a director role within its legal services unit. The legal services unit comprises 30 paralegals in Glasgow and Edinburgh specialising in process-led legal work.
Duncan Weston recently announced he was stepping down from his role as CMS UK managing partner. Corporate partner Stephen Millar will become head of the firm’s UK operations on 1 May.
Millar is a specialist in the oil and gas sector and became co-executive partner for Scotland after CMS Cameron McKenna merged with Dundas & Wilson in 2014.
Weston has relinquished the role of UK head in order to step into a new role as executive partner for global development. He will have responsibility for CMS’s firmwide strategy and will work closely with its executive committee.
