Morgan Lewis hires 2Birds partner to double City headcount in 18 months

Morgan Lewis has hired Bird & Bird corporate partner Stephen Walters, adding to a string of recent hires from mid-tier firms.

Walters, who was formerly one of Dewey & LeBoeuf’s most respected partners in Paris, joined Bird & Bird prior to the US firm’s collapse in May 2012 (11 May 2012). He specialises in public and private M&A, particularly in the energy, financial services and life sciences sectors.

At both of his former firms Walters divided his time between London and Paris.

Morgan Lewis’ London managing partner Peter Sharp said his hire would help to integrate the firm’s London and Paris offices.

The move will reunite Walters with Sharp, who headed up Dewey’s City outpost and also quit in the month leading to the firm’s administration (3 May 2012).

His addition means that Morgan Lewis’ City office is now home to a total of 22 partners, and has more than doubled in size over the past 18 months.

It also marks the third lateral partner hire into the practice since January 2014. In February, Morgan Lewis hired Irwin Mitchell’s regulatory and criminal investigations head Kevin Robinson. Meanwhile, it bought in partner Tom Cartwright from Taylor Wessing, with the remit of launching the firm’s dedicated private equity practice in London (6 March 2014).

Sharp noted that the firm is “certainly engaged in a program to expand the London office”, with a particular focus on bulking ups its transactional offering.
