Herbies focuses on London in 23-strong promos round

Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) has added 23 associates to its partnership, with almost half of those made up based in London.

Among the new partners, 11 are based in London, one in Paris, seven in the firm’s Australia offices, two in Hong Kong and one each in Shanghai and Singapore.

In comparison, the firm promoted just four London-based lawyers in a promotions round of 19 last year (23 April 2013), its first round of promotions following the merger between Herbert Smith and Freehills (28 June 2012).

The promotion of projects lawyer Matthew Osborne in Singapore will reboot the office’s partnership following a number of exits (21 November 2013), the most recent being that of South-East Asia litigation chief Maurice Burke (4 February 2014). Singapore is the only jurisdiction where both legacy firms had an office.

In terms of practice areas, the majority of the new promotions – five in London and four in Australia – are in disputes. The firm is in the middle of a pilot scheme to explore how its Belfast office could support the firm’s Australian disputes practice (20 January 2014), a plan that has been on the cards since 2012 (19 November 2012).

Before the merger legacy Herbert Smith’s partner promotions had been getting leaner each year, with 18 new members in 2010 (20 April 2010), a number that fell to 13 in 2011 (27 April 2011) and 10 in 2012 (26 April 2012).
