DLA Piper has announced that Lisa Haile and Mark Fowler have been named to the Daily Journal’s 2014 list of ‘Top Intellectual Property Lawyers’, which recognises the top 75 intellectual property (IP) litigators and top 25 patent portfolio managers in California.
The Daily Journal highlighted Haile’s continued work to define which stem cell technologies are patentable in Europe. She is set to present oral arguments before the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg later this month to clarify this. London’s High Court recently considered an appeal by Haile in her representation of International Stem Cell Corp. She told the Daily Journal: ‘Several large companies and patent offices in various countries wrote in and many are in our favour and support the patenting of stem cell technologies that don’t involve destruction of an embryo.’ This is the third straight year she has been honoured on this list.
Fowler was recognised for his extensive work in a patent infringement case on behalf of GSI Technology, Cisco Systems and Avnet, in which he secured a victory in front of the US International Trade Commission. This was a long-standing case, filed two years earlier by Cypress Semiconductor Corp, a semiconductor design and manufacturing company. Fowler successfully argued that his clients did not infringe on any of Cypress Semiconductor Corp’s patents. Fowler told the Daily Journal that his work as an intellectual property litigator is a perpetual ‘learning experience’ as the technology in every case is different.
Haile, who serves as co-chair of DLA Piper’s global life sciences practice, has technical experience in molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, diagnostics, therapeutics, theranostics and bioinformatics. She also focuses her practice on patentability, non-infringement and validity opinions; licensing strategies; FDA counselling; due diligence work in connection with venture capital, private and public financing; mergers and acquisitions in the life sciences industry; and strategic counselling for comprehensive life sciences patent portfolio management.
Fowler, who serves as co-chair of DLA Piper’s patent litigation practice, focuses on patent infringement litigation with sophisticated experience arguing cases before the International Trade Commission and the Federal Circuit, as well as district courts in California, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, Delaware, Washington, Utah, Florida, Illinois and Ohio. His background also encompasses years of working on trade secret and other complex business litigation.
