Jones Day is completely refurbishing its London office, which has seen headcount grow dramatically in recent years, in a bid to avoid a costly premises move.
The US firm still has 12 years remaining on its lease for its UK headquarters at 21 Tudor Street near Blackfriars. As the firm’s London office administrator Peter Cross said, in recent years the firm’s City headcount has grown significantly while there has also been a major shift in the ratio of lawyers to secretaries from 2:1 to nearer to 6:1.
“As a result, we’ve been able to better utilise the floor plate of the building,” added Cross. “In essence, the overall objective of the refurbishment is to bring our people together.”
The move is also designed to extend the shelf life of the firm’s current home, a decision that will include a number of lawyers sharing offices at Jones Day for the first time.
“As part of this refurbishment, we’re creating break-out areas on each floor to encourage lawyers to interact more with each other across all practice areas,” added Cross. “We’re also integrating certain teams such as BD and graduate recruitment into the heart of the building to ensure that they become a central part of day-to-day activity.”
Cross is also assisting on the fit-out of other offices in Jones Day’s international network. These include Moscow, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Mexico.
“We believe that the outcome of this refurbishment will be that we can stay within 21 Tudor Street, accommodating the anticipated future growth of the London office for the ‘life’ of the building,” added Cross.
Jones Day’s London litigation group, headed by partner Craig Shuttleworth, was the first to move into the refurbished space, partly because of the rapid growth of that practice in recent years.
