Survey reveals star judges

High Court judges Mr Justices Aikens, Jackson, Kitchin, Langley and Mann have emerged as the stars of the bench.

According to exclusive research by The Lawyer, the fantastic five had only one judgment between them overturned in the Court of Appeal last year. This equates to a success rate of 93 per cent of the 15 cases referred to the higher court.

By comparison, the average High Court judge had around 60 per cent of judgments upheld in the Court of Appeal.

At the other end of the scale, Mr Justices Evans-Loombe and Warren had a combined total of nine judgments overturned in the Court of Appeal over the past 12 months.

During the last court year, there were 161 appeals of decisions that High Court justices had made in the chancery and commercial courts. The Court of Appeal agreed with the High Court judges in 101 cases, overturning 60, or 37 per cent, of decisions.
