Russian aluminium giant Rusal has appointed a new managing director for legal affairs.

The appointment comes a day after the company announced a $30bn tripartite merger with domestic rival Sual International and the aluminium businesses of Swiss commodities trader Glencore International, as reported on TheLawyer.com (9 October).

Peter Clateman has been appointed to the company’s top legal role, with responsibility for all legal aspects of M&A and joint venture deals and fundraising for the company’s projects.

Clateman joins Rusal from the Sputnik Group, where he was head of legal and served on the board of a number of the company’s subsidiaries since 2000.

Prior to moving in-house he worked in the London and Moscow offices of Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom between 1998 and 2000.

Clateman started his legal career in the New York office of White & Case in 1995 and was based in the firm’s Tashkent office between 1996 and 1997.

Rusal was jointly advised by Ashurst, Russian firm Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners and US firm Gibson Dunn & Crutcher on its tripartite merger.

The in-house advice was led by Rusal’s legal department’s head of M&A, Maxim Sokov. Meanwhile, Linklaters advised both Sual and Glencore.

Rusal will hold a majority 66 per cent stake in the merged company, with Sual holding 22 per cent and Glencore 12 per cent.
