Clifford Chance Italy managing partner Nick Wrigley is leaving the firm, sparking an unexpected local management election.

Wrigley is joining renewable energy developer UPC Energy Partners, a client of the firm. He will remain of counsel to Clifford Chance in Italy.

Last year Wrigley stood against then-London head Peter Charlton for the role of global head of corporate. Charlton won that election and succeeded David Childs, who is now firmwide managing partner.

In a statement, Clifford Chance senior partner Stuart Popham commented: “Nick is a talented lawyer and has been a highly effective managing partner of our operations in Italy. We wish him well and look forward to continuing to work with him in his role as an adviser to the firm.”

The election for Italy managing partner will coincide with the votes for regional managers of Germany and Asia. The nomination process for the latter two roles begin next week.
