One Essex Court is gearing up for an administrative shake-up as the set’s renowned senior clerk Paul Shrubsall is standing down.
Shrubsall, who was hailed as one of six legendary clerks in The Lawyer’s 20th anniversary edition, will leave the chambers on 31 July but will return to the set at the beginning of October as a consultant.
Shrubsall said: “This year I notch up 44 years as a barrister’s clerk. It’s been a great experience and tremendous fun, made more so by all the people I’ve worked with.”
Darren Burrows will take over as senior clerk and Jackie Ginty will become deputy senior clerk.
Shrubsall said he had every confidence in Burrows and Ginty and was sure that the standard of clerking and service that had been set will be maintained in the future.
Under Shrubsall, the set has had a year-on-year average growth of 6 per cent.
The set is one of the top-five commercial chambers in terms of turnover, and according to The Lawyer’s Bar Top 30 it brought in £31m in fees last year.
