Miranda launches in Texas

Portuguese independent Miranda Correia Amendoeira e Associados has become the first European independent to open in Texas, with the establishment of an office in Houston.

The Houston office ties in with the firm’s oil and gas expertise through its Miranda Alliance, a series of associations with six African firms and a firm in Macau, a special administrative region of China. African nations involved include Angola, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé e Príncipe. Local bar regulations prevent full integration.

Managing partner Agostinho de Miranda said: “The legal industry has become a global business and those providing non-commoditised cross-border services need to get closer to potential clients in order to continue to grow.”

Nuno Catanas has been appointed managing partner of the Houston office. Catanas, who has experience in construction projects, corporate law, financing and foreign investment, previously worked in Macau for four years.

“The support showed by clients on our decision to open the Houston office guarantees us, from the very beginning, success in this new venture,” said Catanas.
