Finland’s Castrén bags non-lawyer director

Finnish independent Castrén & Snellman has brought in its first managing director from outside the firm, hiring Jukka Niemi from Scandinavian financial services group Nordea.

Niemi is the first non-lawyer to assume a leading role at Castrén. He has been director of Nordea’s Basel II compliance programme since 2004 and before that was managing director of Nordea Investment Management for three years.

When Niemi joins the firm in February, managing partner Pekka Jaatinen will become chairman of the firm’s board.

Jaatinen said: “We continue to grow very rapidly both in Finland and internationally. This is why we’re facing new challenges in the management of an expert organisation.”

Castrén has a turnover of ?25m (£17.42m) and this year made up two partners, boosting its partnership to 23 members.
