Humberside County Council is being taken to the High Court in a compensation claim over damage allegedly caused to a house by tree roots. John and Katherine Whitfield say they suffered loss, damage, expense and inconvenience as a result of movement, cracking and distortion of the house which they blame on roots of trees by the public footpath.

Social worker Ian Davidson of Looe, Cornwall, is seeking damages over an insurance company's failure to meet his claim for permanent health insurance. Davidson, 50, claimed on his policy after suffering acute medical problems which stopped him from working. But he claims Unum, of Dorking, tried to avoid his policy in July 1991 and is suing the company for damages and interest.

A Herne Bay, Kent, man has launched High Court action against his mother following a change in her will. Joseph Juan claims his widowed mother, Mrs Daisy Juan, of Dover, agreed to leave her former Canterbury council house home to him when she died because he had paid for improvements to it. However, the writ says Mrs Juan told Joseph that she changed her will and refused to confirm that it keeps to the original promise.

A Staffordshire man who needed eight operations after being knocked over as he crossed a road is suing the car driver, Patrick Loaring, of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. Edward Hinkin, 36, received multiple injuries and claims he has had to give up sporting activities. He now has great difficulty in right handed activity, risks suffering osteoarthiritis, is handicapped on the labour market and is expected to be left with permanent disability.

A High Court claim has been launched over a 1992 motorcycle crash in which two men died. Alison Underdown, of Whitstable, Kent, is suing the personal representatives of Christopher King, who was riding the motorcycle on which her boyfriend Philip Biss was pillion passenger.
