Akzo bags new GC

Dutch chemicals company Akzo Nobel has hired a new chief lawyer from energy company NUON, following the retirement of general counsel Jan Eijsbouts.

Jan Karel van der Staay was general counsel at NUON and will join Akzo Nobel in April, taking over from Eijsbouts in June.

Eijsbouts spent eight years of his 18-year career at Akzo Nobel as general counsel, overseeing the merger of Akzo Nobel.

Van der Staay has been general counsel at NUON since 2004, and before that was a legal affiars director at Rabobank and head of legal services at Philips in the Netherlands.

At the end of last year Akzo Nobel completed the first phase of a radical panel overhaul, selecting Eversheds and Addleshaw Goddard as its main firms in the UK.
