What was your first-ever job? Babysitting. When I accidentally dislocated a two-year-old’s elbow while swinging him around I realised this wasn’t a long-term option.
What was your worst experience as a trainee?
Being shouted at by a judge during my first bit of advocacy and losing. My boss forced me to make the application again before the same judge. The same shouting ensued.
Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
I take ex-trainees out for lunch. They tell me all.
What time do you usually leave the office?
As early as I can, but my BlackBerry finds me.
What do you do at weekends?
Teach Sunday school, go to church, walk the pooch, shop, sleep and hang out with friends.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
You can’t beat breakfast in New York but I eat anything, anywhere.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been?
A children’s TV presenter.
What’s your favourite film?
Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightley.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Thriller by Michael Jackson.
Who’s your hero and why?
God. He has rescued me many times.
What’s the best thing about your job?
Being able to make a real difference in people’s lives.
What is the toughest thing about your job?
Living with injustice.
What was your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it?
I served a claim form in my personal injury [PI] seat which reduced the pleadings from four months to 14 days. My boss was supportive when he got over the shock. I learned to not make assumptions, own up immediately and be supportive to others.
What car do you drive?
Mercedes SLK 350.
What book are you currently reading?
All I’ve had time for this month is fashion mags.
What’s your favourite children’s book?
The Biblical story of David and Goliath.
What’s the most exciting deal/case you’ve worked on and why?
A case where a lad fell through the gap between train and platform, and lost a leg and three fingers. Winning the trial and then the appeal case against a national company was great.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what two luxury items would you take?
A sat nav and a book on how to escape from a desert island.
What’s the worst partner conference location you’ve attended and why?
A PI conference in Brighton where I locked myself out of my room in my pyjamas when the fire alarm went off.
What’s the longest you’ve worked without sleep?
About 18 hours.
If a movie was being made about your life, which actor would play you and why?
I’m often compared to Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde – I can’t think why.
Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?
A hungry cannibal.
Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (in any order)
I’ve done three parachute jumps; I taught myself how to cut hair and play the guitar; I have a shark phobia.
