Cleary Gottlieb shakes up European partners

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has shuffled a number of partners in Europe as part of a policy of dispersing senior US lawyers throughout its overseas offices

William Darrow has returned to London from Rome, William McGurn has moved from Paris to fill Darrow’s shoes and, in turn, New York partner Russell Pollack will relocate to Paris.
Darrow said: “Cleary Gottlieb has a policy of partner deployment. We like to rotate partners to bring new blood into our offices.”
Although he will be based in London, Darrow will not relinquish fully his role in Italy. He moved to Rome three years ago, having spent nearly 30 years at Cleary’s London office. “London represents my more natural habitat. In a sense, I’m coming home,” he commented.
Pollack, too, is returning to where he spent a considerable portion of his career; his three tours of duty in Europe included two periods in Paris and one in Frankfurt.
Darrow said that his focus in London will be on growing the M&A practice. He and capital markets specialist Edward Greene will be the senior US partners.
