Passion plates

Another rather more flashy form of branding is the personalised number plate and the bar is being plagued by a rogue trader trying to offload his stylised plate, which reads “LAWYA”, for a whopping £20,000.

So far he has had little success. Frankly, Tulkinghorn is not surprised – even if the bar was awash with overpaid lads with nothing better to do with their money (which of course it isn't) the inaccurate spelling would surely put them off.

As it stands, “lawya” suggests an oikish rat, or even a gangsta-rapping practitioner – too much it seems, even for the clerks.

But who in Lincoln's Inn, Tulkinghorn wonders, is the proud owner of the number plate “libel”?
