McDermott Will & Emery’s Munich office has scooped a highly rated team of tax lawyers from German firm Raupach & Wollert-Elmendorff.
Arndt Raupach and Dirk Pohl, two of the best-known tax lawyers in Germany, have jumped ship, along with counsel Rüdiger con Groll and associate Gero Burwitz. Raupach, who stood down from the equity last year, will join McDermott as counsel, while his chosen successor at Raupach Pohl will join as an equity partner.
The key hires will significantly bolster McDermott’s tax capability in Germany, taking the number of tax partners in the jurisdiction to three. However, they will come as a major blow to the Deloitte & Touche-associated German firm, which will be left with just one tax lawyer in Munich.
A well-placed source said the departures were inevitable due to the restrictions imposed on multidisciplinary practices under Sarbanes-Oxley.
“The firm was conflicted from acting in a number of tax litigation cases for multinationals because Deloitte was already acting as auditor,” said the source.
