Sullivan boosts London with Shearman hire

Sullivan & Cromwell has boosted its London tax practice with the hire of rated specialist Michael McGowan from the UK arm of Shearman & Sterling.

McGowan’s transaction-focused tax practice will bolster Sullivan& Cromwell’s London corporate group, which launched two years ago with the hire of Allen & Overy M&A partner Vanessa Blackmore. Corporate partner Tim Emmerson joined last year from Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy.

Rodgin Cohen, chairman of Sullivan & Cromwell, said, “The addition of McGowan’s impressive expertise and track record in advising clients on UK tax matters represents an important addition to our UK law practice, and is the latest in a series of initiatives we have taken to strengthen our European practice.”

When McGowan starts in May, it will not be the first time he has set foot in Sullivan & Cromwell’s offices. He was a visiting lawyer in the tax group in 1993.
