Firm profile: Grundberg

Both Grundberg Mocatta Rakison’s identity and its business are strongly international in their flavour.

Perhaps this is no surprise given that senior partner Anders Grundberg was among the first Swedes to qualify in English law and then to set up in practice back in 1977.

Today around a third of the firm’s £5.8m turnover comes from the Nordic region and Grundberg estimates that around 75 per cent of its work has an international content. “We’re not fazed by that,” he says. “Sometimes the only English content is the language and the law.”

In keeping with the international emphasis, Grundberg is just one of the bilingual lawyers in a firm where 21 languages are spoken among the 39 fee-earners.

The firm has a senior partner, a chief executive and a non-executive management committee that includes representatives of all practice areas. There are three equity partners.

Grundberg argues that giving clients access to partners is one of the firm’s main objectives, with just less than half of its 31 lawyers belonging to the partnership.

Traditionally known as a private client practice, the firm undertook a strategic review five years ago to increase its corporate expertise, and with that in mind brought on board Robert Rakison from McDermott Will & Emery to head the team.

Over this period Grundberg claims that his firm has tripled both in terms of “bodies and work”, while corporate – increasingly targeting private equity – has overtaken private client, employment and property as the leading sector.

The changes in the rules governing non-doms have heralded a busy time for the firm, as a large amount of its private client practice concerns international tax work for high-net-worth individuals.

Nevertheless, the senior partner argues that current clients will “be replaced by others with a shorter UK plan. Once the dust has settled,” he adds, “there will [still] be attractions here.”
