Killing the beans

Which magic circle partner turned nasty after being rebuffed by a journalist?

Tulkinghorn's mother always used to say: “Look after the pennies and the pounds take care of themselves.” Law firms, however, seem to be taking this to bizarre extremes.

It has been well documented that larger practices have been cutting back on partner shindigs, including Clifford Chance and, of course, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, which famously denied that last year's Christmas party had been cancelled, only to have a letter detailing the plan suddenly come to light.

Anyway, news reaches Tulkinghorn that Linklaters has instituted a cull on providing jars of jellybeans at the London office. Now, either Linklaters spends a lot on jellybeans or things are really tight over at Silk Street at the moment.

Linklaters, though, is not on its own on this little exercise: while making two fee-earners redundant, RadcliffesLeBrasseur also decided to cut back on biscuits and Christmas cards.

Tulkinghorn would like to point out that without his 11am and 4pm biscuit breaks, he simply wouldn't be able to perform to the best of his abilities. Having said that, he also wouldn't be several stone overweight. Forget the Atkins Diet – just banning the jellybeans is the modern diet for lawyers.
