Australia’s Gilbert & Tobin has entered into a strategic alliance with China’s largest commercial law firm King & Wood.

Under the alliance, the firms will create a joint partner committee to cater for clients in China, to develop their businesses across Asia Pacific and to share legal and management skills.

Gilbert & Tobin managing partner Danny Gilbert said: “We expect to be the referral point for work coming in through them to Australia. We also expect to see work opportunities jointly with them in China and Asia.”

The alliance, which will also see the two firms enter into lawyer and partner exchange programs is not on an exclusive basis.

The 600-partner King & Wood had formed a similar alliance with Japanese law firm Miyake Yamazaki in 2005. King & Wood operates its Tokyo office in association with the firm.
