South Africa’s biggest law firm merger waits on competition clearance

Edward Nathan and Sonnenberg Hoffmann Galombik are merging to create South Africa’s largest law firm.

The merger, which is subject to clearance by the South African competition authority, is expected to be completed by September.

The combined firm will have 113 partners and a turnover of in excess of 400m rand (£32m). The 290-lawyer firm will have offices in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Edward Nathan chairman Michael Katz will chair the merged entity while Sonnenberg executive chairman will take over as chief executive officer.
Under the terms of the agreement Edward Nathan will adopt Sonnenberg’s modified lock step.

Commenting on the move Edward Nathan chief executive Bruce Schbach told The Lawyer that the merger creates synergies on a number of fronts including geographic reach and depth of resource.
