CITY practices Oswald Hickson Collier and Elias Freeman Solicitors are planning to expand their international client base following a merger earlier this month.
The new firm, which combines media law and insurance litigation with property and commercial expertise, also provides specialist advice on immigration and tax issues to clients relocating both from the UK and internationally.
Lawyers in the practice speak most European languages as well as Chinese, Japanese and Arabic, and clients are spread across the world.
Partner David Freeman says the merger resulted from a need on the part of both firms to advise on areas outside their own portfolios. He says Elias Freeman's international expertise will be enhanced by the union with a larger firm.
“When you are good at something people come back to you, recommend you to their friends, and want you to do more work for them,” he says.
“This inevitably leads to the situation where lawyers are asked to become involved in matters which may be outside their area of expertise.
“Although there are firms which continue to specialise in one area of law, there is a powerful logic behind mergers which widen the range of specialist services a firm can offer.
“Oswald Hickson is a strong firm. I'm hoping our arrival here will result in us expanding the international side as well. We're already finding the international contacts we had before are responding positively.”
