The feisty female contingent at The Lawyer news desk last week was shocked, saddened and dismayed to see that sexism – yes, sexism! – is well and truly alive within the UK legal profession. The evidence? None other than an innocent-looking press release from that bastion of ‘right-on’, wimmin-supporting, PC-influenced ethics, the Association of District Judges.
The release announced the appointment of a new president of the association and gave the following details about the president’s children: “a married daughter and two sons.” It then went on to give the occupations of the two sons, yet totally ignored the seemingly too-boring-to-mention married daughter.
Tulkinghorn wondered which part of the daughters’ description consigned her to oblivion – the married part, or the female part? Tut tut.
